This service is to deck your tapered brake pads back to flat for much less than the cost of a new set of pads. Tapered brake pads cause poor initial bite, and are more prone to cause power-robbing brake drag.
The factory Miata single-piston brake calipers move in unwanted directions during hard braking. “Race prepped” rebuilt calipers with polished pistons, good slide pin holes, and new slide pins help the problem, but the single-piston floating caliper design still causes brake pads to taper when used in racing applications. The only solution we’ve found to keep these braking systems working optimally is to use good calipers rebuilt by a reputable Spec Miata race shop and replace the brake pads 1-2 times per weekend using flat brake pads.
